People aren’t reading novels

I don’t know why there isn’t a Pulitzer for fiction this year, but I’ve seen this before and it jumped out at me:

In a time when people aren’t buying books — especially literary adult novels — it seems counterproductive and insulting not to hand out a Pulitzer Prize, which translates into sales.

I’m guilty of that. I got one of those e-book readers two years ago and I buy a lot more nonfiction books than I did before. Finding them in France was hard, and when I found them they were expensive. Now I have access to what I want to read.

But fiction? Everything published before 1923 is free for me now. So I’ve been reading a few classics. There are lots of old books that I’ve never read that I should have; I finally read The Scarlet Letter last year(it was assigned in high school) and absolutely loved it.

I know writers need to support themselves, but I suck as a human being is all I can say.
