How Turks avoid military service

It turns out that the bigger concern in Turkey when it comes to their “No gays in the military” rule is that straight people would lie to get out of military service. It makes sense that that wasn’t the focus of the US under DADT – military service is voluntary (as much as it can be in the context of a society with a rigid class structure that links basic needs to employment while not providing enough jobs for everyone) – but you’d think some people would have been concerned about people using DADT to get out early. There’s a reason the military signs multi-year contracts enforced with prison time with soldiers: if they could treat it like a regular job lots would leave when it wasn’t worth their time anymore.
