Ezra Klein argues that Paul Ryan (and, by extension, Republicans in general) don’t really want to screw the country by cutting social programs that serve the 99% while cutting taxes for the 1%, they just have to because their ideology painted them into a corner.
Apparently they painted themselves into a corner because of total, random luck. Their arguments on why rich people need tax cuts, why the budget needs to be balanced now, and why defense spending can’t go down just popped into their heads. Nothing to see here, folks, it just turned out that way.
Republicans could propose cuts to defense spending and increases in taxes. It’s actually not illegal or against the laws of physics. Why don’t they? Could it be because they’re serving their donors’ interests instead of America’s interests? Are we allowed to consider that?
