Do as I do, but I won’t make you

Santorum’s strategy on going mainstream on social issues (at least mainstream in the context of a Republican primary) seems to be that he just opposes lots of things personally, but he’d never impose that on others. He’s made that argument on both contraception and social issues generally, although his actual stances on actual issues bely this position.

Some consultant must have told him that no one wants Daddy Santorum telling them what they can and can’t do with their genitalia isn’t focus grouping all that well. People want politicians to tell others what they can and can’t do, not themselves, so the contraception thing is a little too close to home.
