LGBT poverty is a problem

The Advocate made it all about marriage, but there’s an actual problem here: LGBT people, especially older lesbians and trans women, are more likely to live in poverty than straight couples. The issue isn’t a tax break that a minority of same-sex couples are denied – it’s lifelong transphobic, sexist, and homophobic discrimination; a country that has instituted and defends rigid class boundaries; and an economic ideology that pretends that the only way an economy to be lifted up is on the backs of a large underclass.
